Fetch.ai launches Visa payments for autonomous AI agents
Fetch.ai prepares January launch of AI agent payment system

Fetch.ai is preparing to launch a payment system in January that will allow AI agents to execute autonomous transactions using Visa cards.

On Thursday, Fetch.ai announced it is conducting final tests of the new feature, which aims to remove one of the biggest barriers to broader adoption of agent-based AI. Currently, due to security and regulatory risks, most agent systems require real-time human approval for payments.

The system, which Fetch.ai plans to launch in January, eliminates that requirement. The company has already used it to book restaurant reservations and purchase airline tickets. Fetch.ai founder and CEO Humayun Sheikh said the challenge lies less in access to payment rails and more in how AI systems are designed.

“We’ve been working on this for at least five years… and the only way to make this work is to enable AI agents to interact with one another and transact,” Sheikh said.

The new payment feature will be hosted on Fetch.ai’s ASI:ONE platform and is designed to allow agents to book services, place orders, and send payments even when users are offline.

Visa first, Mastercard next

Fetch.ai’s first partner for the rollout is global payments giant Visa. To address security concerns, the system uses one-time payment credentials rather than persistent card numbers. Transactions are authorized through Visa, which issues temporary credentials restricted by amount and purpose.

“We connect Visa to the agent to establish trust, security, and a built-in KYC layer,” Sheikh explained, adding that the technology is already ready but the launch was delayed until January to allow Visa to conduct additional checks. Support for Mastercard is expected at a later stage.

The platform supports both traditional card payments and on-chain transactions using USDC or Fetch.ai’s native FET token. The company said it avoids direct bank transfers due to the additional regulatory requirements associated with that approach.

Fetch.ai has also implemented an identity layer requiring agents to act on behalf of identifiable users or companies rather than anonymously. This development comes amid growing resistance from retailers and platforms toward automated purchasing tools that mimic human behavior.
