BNY, Citadel Securities test tokenized U.S. Treasuries for faster Wall Street financing
Wall Street firms are expanding experiments with blockchain-based versions of traditional assets as they look for faster ways to move collateral through market infrastructure. BNY and Citadel Securities say they have completed a transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasuries to show how government bonds can move more quickly from settlement into financing.
Highlights
- BNY and Citadel Securities conducted a trial using tokenized U.S. Treasuries to accelerate collateral movement between settlement and financing workflows.
- BNY plans to expand digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities and extend traditional settlement system operating hours to support global trading by next year.
- Tokenized Treasuries are being embraced by major firms like BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan to modernize infrastructure, shorten settlement, and automate securities transfer.
Tokenized collateral trial and settlement plan
As reported by CoinDesk, the transaction is designed to demonstrate how tokenized U.S. government bonds can move between settlement and financing workflows, potentially letting trading firms reuse collateral sooner and release cash for other market activity.Collateral is a core part of short-term funding markets because banks and trading firms use U.S. Treasuries to secure loans and support trading positions. Moving those bonds across accounts and settlement systems can take time, which leaves assets tied up instead of being redeployed.
In a statement, Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities, says efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets. He adds that reducing delays across the trade lifecycle can improve the way institutional markets operate.
BNY says it plans to introduce more digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support blockchain-based settlement and financing. The bank also says it expects to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement systems for Federal Reserve-eligible securities and U.S. triparty transactions next year, with the aim of reaching European and Asian trading hours.
Broader push to modernize market infrastructure
The test comes as major financial groups explore bringing traditional assets onto blockchains to shorten settlement times, automate manual processes and make securities easier to transfer. BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and JPMorgan are among the firms that have embraced tokenized funds and securities as part of that shift.Carolyn Weinberg, chief innovation and market transformation officer at BNY, says in a statement that using a tokenized representation of a U.S. Treasury across both settlement and financing enables a more connected, efficient and always-on financial system. The transaction points to how tokenized government bonds could be used not only as investment products, but also as operational tools in core Wall Street funding markets.
In our earlier coverage of the surge in developed-market government bond yields, we explained how rising borrowing costs are intensifying fiscal strain and making it harder for countries such as France, the U.S., and the UK to stabilise their debt burdens. We noted that higher yields are lifting refinancing pressure and pushing overall developed-market government debt higher, as deficits remain large across several major economies.
