OKX expands account protection plan for crypto customers
OKX boosts account safety

Crypto platforms are increasing efforts to strengthen customer trust as fraud and account security concerns remain elevated across the sector. OKX says its new protection plan covers compromised customer accounts at no subscription or activation cost, with coverage of up to $100,000 and up to $500,000 for VIP clients.

Highlights

  • OKX expanded its OKX Shield plan, offering up to $100,000 coverage for standard customers and up to $500,000 for VIPs, with no fees.
  • The plan's rollout follows $11.4 billion lost to crypto scams in 2025, addressing heightened market demand for consumer protection and fraud mitigation.
  • OKX and Intercontinental Exchange formed a 50-50 joint venture to build next-generation tokenized product infrastructure, signaling strategic shifts toward integrated digital finance.

Protection rollout and strategic positioning

As reported by The Block, OKX said on Tuesday that its OKX Shield plan offers customers protection if their accounts are compromised, with no subscription or activation fee attached to the service.

The company says the plan covers up to $100,000 for standard customers and up to $500,000 for VIP customers. OKX launched the same product in Europe last month under similar terms as it broadens its push to reassure users about platform security.

OKX Board Director Andrew Cuomo says the initiative is designed to demonstrate confidence in the company's systems as financial markets continue to evolve. Speaking on a call with reporters, he says trust must be built as market disruption continues and argues the company is backing that message with its own balance sheet.

Cuomo, who joined the board in July, also says OKX is shifting from being a crypto company toward becoming a global financial technology company. He says the distinction between traditional finance and the crypto sector is fading as digital asset infrastructure becomes more integrated with mainstream financial products.

Security concerns and wider industry implications

The launch comes as concern over crypto-related scams remains high. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said on Monday that $11.4 billion was lost to crypto scams in 2025 and urged residents to stay alert to threats including artificial intelligence-enabled fraud and rug pulls.

For OKX, the protection plan adds a consumer-facing layer to a broader institutional strategy. A month before Cuomo joined the board, OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, formed a 50-50 joint venture co-chaired by Cuomo to build what they described as next-generation infrastructure for tokenized and digitally native financial products.

The move suggests exchanges are competing not only on trading services, but also on safeguards and credibility as regulators and customers demand stronger protections. In that environment, direct financial coverage for compromised accounts could become a more visible differentiator across the crypto trading market.

Our earlier coverage of CTOS Digital’s cybersecurity incident detailed how the breach and service disruption were expected to hurt results, with the company estimating a RM12 million hit to net profit and a RM16 million drop in revenue. We also noted that analysts downgraded the stock amid concerns that prolonged disruption could raise costs, pressure customer retention, and slow the rebuilding of trust.
