Derive bitcoin options trade targets post-election move above $90,000
With bitcoin trading near $80,000 and broader crypto prices showing limited immediate momentum, options activity is drawing attention to a possible breakout after the U.S. mid-term elections in early November. A trader has built a $68 million position on decentralized platform Derive tied to bitcoin call options that profit if the spot price rises above $90,000 by Nov. 6, 2026.
Highlights
- An $68 million position has been built on Derive with 800 bitcoin $90,000 call options expiring Nov. 6, 2026, targeting a post-U.S. election rally.
- Trader offset the $90,000 position by selling 400 March 2027 $100,000 calls and 400 October 2026 $90,000 calls, raising $940,000 in premium.
- Market-implied probability of bitcoin reaching $100,000 by Christmas climbed to 12% from 9.7% while odds of sub-$70,000 fell to 11% from 15.6%.
Options position builds around election timing
As reported by CoinDesk, the largest open bitcoin position on Derive now centers on 800 contracts for $90,000 call options expiring on Nov. 6, 2026, reflecting a wager that bitcoin climbs after the U.S. mid-term vote. The trade is valued at about $68 million at current bitcoin prices. To establish the position, the trader first sold 400 contracts for $100,000 calls expiring in March 2027 and another 400 for $90,000 calls expiring on Oct. 30, generating roughly $940,000 from those transactions.
That structure points to a tactical view on short-term price movement rather than a broad long-dated bullish stance, with the timing closely aligned to the early November political event and the days immediately after it.
Market odds shift as bullish sentiment firms
Options pricing across the wider market also indicates improving sentiment toward bitcoin. The implied probability of bitcoin reaching $100,000 by Christmas has risen to 12% from 9.7% a week earlier, while the odds of a drop below $70,000 by Christmas have fallen to 11% from 15.6%.Derive remains smaller than centralized rival Deribit, which has operated for more than a decade, but it is emerging as a notable venue for directional crypto bets by notional volume. The positioning suggests traders are becoming more constructive even as traditional markets remain cautious ahead of central bank meetings and earnings announcements.
Our earlier article covered how the tightening U.S. midterm election race was prompting Republican candidates to sharply ramp up advertising spending, even in contests once considered safe. We noted that the shift reflected growing voter focus on inflation, fuel costs and overall affordability, forcing campaign strategists to redeploy resources as polling narrowed in several key states.
