The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded since 1901, honors individuals who have made the greatest contributions to the promotion of peace, reduction of armed forces, or organization of peace congresses.
This year, one of the most talked-about nominees was Donald Trump, who openly claimed he deserved the award for his peace efforts. However, the prize went instead to María Corina Machado, a leading Venezuelan opposition figure and human rights advocate known for her resistance to President Maduro’s socialist regime.
By receiving the Peace Prize, Machado surpassed 338 nominees, including 94 organizations and 244 individuals.
Remarkably, Machado has often spoken positively about cryptocurrency, calling Bitcoin a lifeline for those seeking to protect their wealth or escape oppressive conditions.
In a 2024 interview with Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation, Machado described Bitcoin as a technology that promotes freedom.
“Some Venezuelans found salvation in Bitcoin during hyperinflation, using it to protect their wealth and fund their escape. Today, Bitcoin bypasses government-imposed exchange rates and helps many of our citizens. It has evolved from a humanitarian tool into a vital means of resistance,” Machado said.
According to her, the only way to help Venezuela’s poorest is to ensure property rights, low inflation, and equal access to opportunities and governance.
