Ripple launches $200K Attackathon to secure XRPL lending protocol
Ripple tests new lending protocol

After a turbulent week in which global markets were shaken by political uncertainty and cryptocurrencies surged sharply, Ripple has reignited optimism in the blockchain sector with a major institutional announcement in the DeFi space. The company, in partnership with Immunefi, a firm specializing in blockchain security, has launched a $200,000 “Attackathon” — a global competition inviting security researchers to test the new XRPL Lending Protocol before its validator vote scheduled for the end of this year.

The initiative was announced shortly after XRP recovered above the $2.50 mark and represents one of Ripple’s most ambitious steps toward institutional DeFi integration. The XRPL Lending Protocol introduces fixed-term, uncollateralized loans directly on the XRP Ledger, without using smart contracts or wrapped assets. Instead, it relies on off-chain credit assessments, allowing institutions to apply traditional risk models when conducting lending operations on-chain.

Security as the foundation of the new XRPL ecosystem

“The XRPL community is preparing for one of its most significant upgrades to date,” Jasmine Cooper, Head of Product at RippleX, told Decrypt. “Before implementing any major changes like this, it’s critical to ensure that the code is as secure and resilient as possible.”

According to Cooper, the partnership with Immunefi gives Ripple access to “a global network of elite researchers who have already secured some of the largest DeFi protocols to date.” She added that the Attackathon is “part of a broader, multi-layered security framework” aimed at making XRPL’s institutional credit layer as reliable as possible.

Structure and terms of the Attackathon

The competition will begin on October 27 and run until November 29, 2025, following a two-week educational period during which participants will be able to interact with Ripple engineers, access test environments, and complete XRPL security training. If even one valid vulnerability is discovered, the full $200,000 prize pool will be distributed among researchers. Otherwise, participants who submit valuable insights will receive an additional $30,000 reward.

The Attackathon covers several key components, including the XLS-66 Lending Protocol, Single Asset Vaults, and Permissioned Domains, with priority given to vulnerabilities affecting fund security, liquidation logic, and vault solvency. Ripple’s goal is clear — to create a lending system capable of supporting real institutional credit markets on XRPL by combining blockchain transparency with regulated financial safeguards.

A new chapter for XRP and institutional lending

This initiative reflects Ripple’s broader ambition to position XRP as a foundational infrastructure for enterprise DeFi solutions.

“The goal of this initiative is to ensure that the proposed lending protocol is thoroughly tested and resilient before launch,” Cooper emphasized. Analysts note that the timing — coinciding with the broader market’s recovery — highlights Ripple’s confidence in the long-term role of XRP Ledger within institutional finance.

As Bitcoin and Ethereum continue their upward momentum and risk appetite returns, Ripple’s security-driven strategy could mark a pivotal moment for on-chain credit innovation. Through the Attackathon, the company is inviting the global developer community to help “secure the future of uncollateralized lending” — a mission that combines transparency, technology, and trust at the core of the next stage in the evolution of decentralized finance.
