Pound underperforms as BOE decision contrasts with yen rate hike pricing

The Pound Sterling vs Yen currency pair traded lower as the British Pound weakened following the Bank of England's decision to keep interest rates unchanged. The Japanese Yen outperformed ahead of the Bank of Japan's upcoming monetary policy decision, with markets fully pricing in a 25-basis-point rate hike. Investors monitored signals from the Bank of Japan regarding a future tightening pace.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, points out that GBP/JPY is technically pressured after the BoE kept rates steady and the Yen found support from rate hike anticipation. He notes all key moving averages remain above price, underlining persistent bearish momentum. Sentiment has weakened further due to the BOJ’s shift and clear selling since the open. Fundamental signals also favor Yen strength as expectations of further Bank of Japan tightening grow. Kharitonov cautions, "Selling may continue until clear reversal signs emerge, so traders should be wary of false bottoms."
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees macro catalysts shaping fresh opportunities for GBP/JPY traders this week. He highlights rising anticipation for a Bank of Japan move, but insists the medium-term market structure for GBP/JPY remains constructive if support levels hold. Karapetjanc emphasizes ongoing investor engagement and dynamic price setups within the ¥206.88–¥209 range. "Despite the temporary pullback, upside scenarios can materialize swiftly on a decisive shift in policy signals or risk sentiment," he says.
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, remains skeptical about near-term prospects for GBP/JPY given sustained downside pressure. The analyst stresses that the move below major support levels is a red flag. He notes the session’s persistent selling and elevated volatility as signals of deteriorating sentiment. "Traders should brace for further losses unless the pair can reclaim key resistance fast," warns Dele.

Bearish momentum persists as GBP/JPY trades below key technical levels

GBP/JPY remains under pressure, trading below the 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages (¥211.83, ¥214.05, ¥213.44), which indicates a sustained bearish trend in both the short and long term. The Ichimoku Kijun at ¥212.29 marks a key resistance level well above the current market, with resistance at ¥209 and support at ¥207.9. Momentum indicators including MACD and ADX point to ongoing downside pressure. The RSI reads 31.77 and, along with CCI and BBP, confirms the pair is approaching oversold territory. The Awesome Oscillator does not clarify short-term direction. The pair fell ¥1.21 or 0.58% today and trades near the session low, with intraday volatility at 0.64%, highlighting persistent selling since the open.

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/JPY maintained a bearish technical outlook as selling pressure persisted. This view is reinforced by the current sustained downside momentum, with traders advised to monitor ¥206.88 as a decisive level that could trigger further declines if breached.
