Highlights

  • An upward revision to UK GDP has led to improved demand for Pound Sterling relative to the Yen.
  • The UK's current account balance delivered a positive surprise, supporting financial stability and resilience in Sterling.
  • GBP/JPY trades intraday with strong bullish momentum, targeting a range of ¥207.63 to ¥209.71 over the next two to three days with very high probability of upward movement.

UK growth upgrades and Japanese data divergence lift Sterling demand

An upward revision to UK GDP has provided a tangible boost to the outlook for Pound Sterling, as stronger-than-expected economic growth typically attracts fresh demand for the British currency relative to the Yen. Additionally, the UK's current account balance delivered a positive surprise, signaling improved financial stability and further reinforcing Sterling's underlying resilience. In contrast, disappointing retail sales and industrial production figures from Japan have highlighted ongoing softness in the Japanese economy, contributing to a weaker Yen environment.

Bullish signals tempered as daily resistance and mixed momentum persist

On the technical side, GBP/JPY trades above the MA-20 and MA-50 on the hourly chart but remains below the MA-200 on the daily timeframe. Immediate support is found at the Ichimoku Kijun level of ¥207.88. The MACD shows a Buy signal, while ADX remains neutral, indicating no dominant trend. RSI is at 58.51, falling into Buy territory. Stochastic RSI and CCI are both neutral to modestly bullish, and Bull/Bear Power confirms intraday buyer dominance. However, the Awesome Oscillator does not provide additional direction, leaving overall momentum slightly mixed.

Rangebound consolidation likely as breakout risk remains limited

Looking ahead to the next two to three sessions, GBP/JPY is expected to trade within a range of ¥207.63 to ¥209.71, representing a typical volatility band relative to current levels. The baseline scenario favors consolidation within this corridor. A clear break above resistance may open the door to additional upside, while a breach below the support level could accelerate declines toward lower zones, though such a move remains very unlikely under current conditions.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, Traders Union expert, sees this move in GBP/JPY as supported by both constructive UK data and clear signs of Japanese weakness. He highlights that the upward revision to UK GDP and the improved current account balance offer fundamental backing to the Pound. Technicals show intraday buyer control, but major resistance keeps a lid on broad bullish momentum. Karapetjanc believes the ¥207.63 to ¥209.71 corridor will likely contain short-term price swings. "With resilient macro tailwinds for the Pound and lackluster Japanese data, GBP/JPY is well-positioned to consolidate near the upper end of its recent range."

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/JPY was under sustained bearish pressure, with technical indicators signaling a prevailing downside bias. The current analysis signals a shift in momentum, as recent economic data and improved short-term technicals suggest that traders should watch for a potential break above long-term resistance, which could trigger further gains beyond the current consolidation range.
