Robinhood accelerates Southeast Asia expansion with Indonesia acquisition
Robinhood enters Indonesia with acquisition of licensed brokerage and crypto exchange

Robinhood confirmed Monday that it will enter Indonesia by acquiring PT Buana Capital Sekuritas, a licensed brokerage, and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, a regulated digital-asset exchange.

The move allows the U.S. fintech to bypass lengthy licensing processes and immediately operate under an established regulatory framework, reports Cryptopolitan.

Patrick Chan, Robinhood’s Head of Asia, described Indonesia as “a fast-growing market for trading,” highlighting the country’s dual strength in stock and crypto participation. Indonesia hosts more than 19 million capital-market investors and 17 million crypto investors, making it one of the most active retail markets globally. Robinhood says it will maintain access to local Indonesian financial products for Buana Capital clients while preparing a broader rollout of U.S. equities and crypto. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2026, though financial terms remain undisclosed.

Crypto adoption boom positions Indonesia as regional leader

Indonesia’s deepening crypto engagement is a central factor in Robinhood’s expansion strategy. Chainalysis ranks the country seventh globally in its 2025 adoption index, making it Southeast Asia’s top crypto market. Industry data also shows that total crypto-asset transaction value tripled in 2024 to more than 650 trillion rupiah—roughly $39.7 billion.

This rapid growth signals a maturing digital-asset ecosystem that global platforms are eager to tap into. Robinhood argued that acquiring an already licensed crypto platform significantly eases market entry by reducing compliance friction. Chan added that Indonesia’s momentum aligns with the company’s mission to broaden financial access and streamline cross-border investing for retail users.

Robinhood expands prediction-market footprint amid global push

The Indonesian acquisition comes as Robinhood deepens its efforts in prediction markets, one of its fastest-growing revenue lines. After acquiring a firm tied to FTX in November, the company has leaned more heavily into event-based trading products. Since launching prediction markets in March through its partnership with Kalshi, Robinhood users have traded over nine billion contracts. JB Mackenzie, the firm’s general manager for futures and international, said customer demand has been “extremely strong,” reaffirming Robinhood’s plan to scale the product globally.

The company’s expansion into Europe, the U.K., and now Indonesia underscores a broader strategic shift toward diversified trading offerings beyond equities. As Robinhood prepares for 2026, Indonesia is set to become a key test market for integrating brokerage, crypto, and prediction markets into a unified retail platform.
