Atlantic Canada opens AI funding call with nearly $40 million for businesses
Atlantic Canada unveils AI boost

Atlantic Canadian companies are receiving expanded federal support to adopt artificial intelligence and commercialize their own AI technologies. The funding is aimed at helping firms improve operations, raise output and expand sales across Canada and international markets.

Highlights

  • Government of Canada opens nearly $40 million in federal funding for Atlantic Canadian businesses to adopt or commercialize AI technologies.
  • The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency aims to boost local productivity, competitiveness, and export growth by targeting AI integration across multiple sectors.
  • The funding responds directly to the Atlantic Economic Panel's report highlighting the urgency for more AI adoption to enable business growth and regional prosperity.

Atlantic-wide funding push for AI adoption

As announced by Canada.ca, citing the Government of Canada, businesses across Atlantic Canada can now apply through a regional call for proposals tied to nearly $40 million in additional federal support for artificial intelligence projects.

The program targets companies that want to introduce AI into their operations or bring AI products they have developed to market. Projects may include using AI to manage inventory more effectively, identify issues on production lines or support the launch of new AI-based technologies.

Sean Fraser, Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, says the investment is meant to ensure the region does not fall behind as AI reshapes competition. He says the funding is intended to help local businesses turn technology into growth, improve productivity and reach new customers.

Regional growth and competitiveness focus

The investment also responds to concerns raised in the Atlantic Economic Panel's recent report, Bolder Ambitions: Greater Prosperity for All, which says Atlantic Canada needs to help more businesses use AI to produce more, compete and grow.

By backing both AI adoption and the commercialization of Canadian-developed tools, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is positioning the funding as a way to strengthen regional business capacity at home while supporting export growth. The initiative spans multiple sectors, suggesting the federal government sees AI as a broad economic lever rather than a niche technology program.

In our earlier coverage of the Atlantic Economic Panel’s “Bolder Ambitions” recommendations, we outlined how federal and Halifax business leaders planned a public discussion on turning the report into concrete economic action. The agenda focused on raising productivity, attracting investment, reducing interprovincial barriers, and strengthening long-term growth across Atlantic Canada.
