Edge Early Learning closures leave 11 Australia centres to shut after collapse
Childcare centres to close

Families across Australia are scrambling for alternative childcare after 11 Edge Early Learning centres are set to close with as little as 48 hours' notice. The shutdowns follow the group's move into voluntary administration in August, even as administrators secure offers for most of its remaining network.

Highlights

  • KordaMentha administrators are closing 11 unviable Edge Early Learning centres after failing to secure buyers for these sites.
  • GoodStart Early Learning is acquiring 31 out of 53 Edge centres in Queensland and South Australia, with affected families notified about nearby vacancies.
  • Administrators confirm closures in seven Queensland, three South Australia, and one ACT centre, intensifying sector pressures and reducing suburban childcare options.

Centre sale process and closure timeline

As reported by ABC News, administrators at KordaMentha say they secure offers for 53 Edge Early Learning centres in Queensland and South Australia after the provider collapses, but they cannot find buyers for 11 sites judged unviable to keep operating.

The affected centres include seven in Queensland, three in South Australia and one in the ACT. GoodStart Early Learning proposes to acquire 31 facilities as part of the sale process, while the remaining 11 centres are scheduled to close from late Wednesday.

Some parents only learn on Tuesday morning that their centres are due to shut within two days. A KordaMentha spokesman says affected families are being notified in writing about nearby services where some places are available for new enrolments.

Pressure on families and childcare operators

KordaMentha administrator David Johnstone says the closures will affect staff, families and carers who now need to make alternative childcare arrangements. The centres subject to closure are Cannon Hill, Kelvin Grove, Milton, Morayfield East, South Brisbane, Strathpine - Railway Avenue and West End - Jane St in Queensland, Ngunnawal in the ACT, and Oaklands Park, Plympton and Royal Park in South Australia.

The closures underline the difficult conditions facing childcare operators in Australia, where Edge Early Learning enters voluntary administration amid broader sector pressure. While the sale of most centres preserves part of the network, the loss of 11 locations adds disruption for local communities and narrows childcare availability in affected suburbs.

Our earlier article on Bass Coast Shire Council’s short-stay accommodation fee hike explained how higher local charges and Victoria’s statewide booking levy are intensifying cost pressures for holiday rental operators. We noted that owners and industry groups warned the combined fees could undermine short-stay viability and tighten supply during peak periods, while the council argued the increase was needed to cover enforcement and tourism-related impacts.
