United Airlines tightens MileagePlus qualification rules for 2027
United MileagePlus rules change

United Airlines is raising the bar for customers seeking elite MileagePlus status in the 2027 qualification year. The carrier is removing flight segments from its Premier status formula and increasing the spending threshold for its top Premier 1K tier.

Highlights

  • United Airlines will eliminate the option to combine flight segments with Premier qualifying points for MileagePlus elite status beginning January 1, 2027.
  • Premier 1K qualification will require 32,000 qualifying points in 2027, up from 28,000 in 2026, with all tiers now based exclusively on points.
  • Cardholders with existing Premier status will automatically receive 5% of required points at each year's start, reinforcing the shift toward credit card and spending-based loyalty.

MileagePlus changes take effect in 2027

As reported by CNBC, United announced Monday that MileagePlus members will no longer be able to combine flight segments with Premier qualifying points to earn elite status starting Jan. 1. The Chicago-based airline says Premier status will instead be based only on points earned through eligible flight spending, award travel and qualifying United credit card spending.

Under the revised structure, the entry-level Premier Silver tier remains available at 6,000 points, but members lose the previous option of qualifying with 15 flight segments and 5,000 points in a calendar year. The points-only thresholds for Premier Gold and Premier Platinum remain unchanged from the earlier points-only path.

United is also increasing the requirement for Premier 1K, its highest published rewards tier, to 32,000 qualifying points from 28,000 in 2026. Flyers earn one Premier qualifying point per dollar spent on United base fares and upgrades, and for every 100 miles redeemed for travel on United flights, while United Chase cardholders can also accumulate points through card spending.

Loyalty strategy centers on spending and card engagement

MileagePlus members still need to take at least four flights on United or United Express in a year to qualify for Premier status, even under the new points-focused model. In comments to travel website The Points Guy, United President of MileagePlus Jarad Fisher describes the flight segments measure as an “old relic” and says a single metric gives customers a more consistent target across their flying and broader airline engagement.

United also says cardholders who already hold Premier status will automatically receive 5% of the points needed to reach the level they earned in the prior year when a new year begins. The latest change extends a broader overhaul of United's loyalty economics this year, after the airline revised how travelers earn miles to favor co-branded credit card users and reduced earnings for basic economy fares, following similar moves by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Our earlier coverage of Mastercard’s rally highlighted how payment stocks were strengthening on resilient consumer spending, with Mastercard nearing a key $600 technical resistance level. We noted that a sustained move above $600 could confirm a breakout setup and open the way to higher price targets, while a failure to clear that level could trigger a short-term pullback.
