Public development banks are preparing for a larger role in financing long-term growth as tighter fiscal conditions strain countries' ability to fund development priorities. Against that backdrop, the sixth Finance in Common Summit will be held in Bangkok from 31 March to 2 April 2027, bringing together more than 500 institutions and their stakeholders.

Highlights

  • Asian Development Bank will co-host the 2027 Finance in Common Summit at the United Nations Convention Center in Bangkok, marking the event's first time in Asia.
  • Over 2,000 participants representing public development banks that collectively manage about $23 trillion in assets are expected to attend, focusing on project origination, networking, and innovative transactions.
  • Summit agenda emphasizes mobilizing more private capital, sharing and co-financing projects, reducing duplication among institutions, and sustaining long-term investment during economic crises.

Bangkok summit agenda and scale

As reported by Asian Development Bank, citing its own announcement, the 2027 Finance in Common Summit takes place at the United Nations Convention Center in Bangkok and marks the first time the gathering is held in Asia. ADB is co-hosting the event with support from Agence Française de Développement and other regional and global partners under the theme, “Delivering Sustainable Growth for a More Resilient Future.”

The meeting brings together leaders from public development banks that collectively manage about $23 trillion in assets. More than 2,000 participants are expected, including bank executives, senior government officials, regulators, business leaders, institutional investors, civil society representatives, researchers, and international organizations.

The program includes plenary discussions, working sessions, investment pitches, and meetings between financial institutions and prospective partners. Organizers are positioning the Bangkok gathering as a “Summit of Delivery,” with a focus on project origination, innovative transactions, networking, and investment opportunities across Asia and the Pacific.

Financing priorities and regional implications

ADB President Masato Kanda says the summit comes at a time when the international system is fragmenting, development needs are rising, and delays carry mounting costs. Finance in Common Chairman Rémy Rioux says bringing the coalition to Asia for the first time marks a turning point for a region where public development banks continue to play a critical role in sustainable development.

Finance in Common, launched in 2020 as a global forum for public development banks, coordinates investment, strengthens common practices, and seeks to amplify the sector's voice in international economic debates. Its members invest about $2.5 trillion a year, with the Bangkok agenda set to emphasize mobilizing more private capital, sharing and co-financing projects, reducing duplication among institutions, and sustaining long-term investment during economic crises.

The 2027 meeting follows previous summits in Paris in 2020, Rome in 2021, Abidjan in 2022, Cartagena in 2023, and Cape Town in 2025. It also advances issues addressed during ADB’s 2026 chairship of the Heads of Multilateral Development Banks and the 2026 Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, including financing for nature positive investment, climate resilience, and clean energy.

Our earlier article on affluent investors’ shift from private credit into infrastructure finance explained how capital is rotating toward hard-asset themes such as data centers amid persistent inflation. We also noted that while the allocation change supports long-term infrastructure investment, it can carry familiar liquidity risks because these strategies may be difficult to exit quickly when cash needs rise.
