Manila meeting centers on AI and banking safeguards
As reported by BusinessWorld, citing the Bankers Association of the Philippines, the 54th ASEAN Banking Council Meeting will take place on Nov. 12-14 at Makati Shangri-La Manila under the theme, “AI-Driven Banking in ASEAN: Securing Our Future Together.” The event brings together banking leaders from across the region as lenders assess how AI can improve customer experience, streamline operations, strengthen fraud detection and support risk assessment. The Philippines is hosting the ASEAN Banking Council Meeting for the third time, after previous gatherings in 2004 and 2014. The BAP, which serves as the lead organization of universal and commercial banks in the country, said this year’s theme highlights the need to pair financial services innovation with responsibility.
The group said banks are working to build capabilities to use AI effectively while maintaining safeguards against emerging risks. It added that growing links between digital services and financial transactions across markets are increasing the need for institutions and banking associations to share expertise and strengthen risk management.
Regional cooperation seen as key for ASEAN banks
The meeting is part of broader efforts to deepen banking cooperation in Southeast Asia under the ASEAN Bankers Association, which includes banking associations from 11 ASEAN member states. The body aims to promote cooperation and knowledge-sharing on industry priorities and developments affecting the financial sector. For a region with varied banking systems and different stages of digital development, closer collaboration can help ensure AI benefits are pursued alongside sound governance, customer protection and financial stability, the BAP said. It added that regional dialogue gives banking leaders a forum to compare views on common challenges and consider how institutions can adapt to technological change while preserving trust in the financial system.
As host, the BAP said it is seeking to foster dialogue among banking communities as emerging technologies such as AI shape the industry’s development. It added that the meeting also reinforces the role of the ASEAN Bankers Association as a platform for associations to address shared concerns and support a more connected, resilient and future-ready banking sector.
Our earlier report on the Bank of England’s push for “bare metal” recovery planning highlighted how AI is raising the scale and complexity of cyber threats to banks’ core systems. We noted that regulators want lenders to complement traditional defenses with independent, end-to-end recovery options to keep critical services running if primary technology is compromised.
