Andrew Follett estimates that the highest cost to the U.S. government from the discussed event is $45 billion. He adds that, while this figure may seem high, it is relatively small compared to recent fraud in the largest U.S. state, amounting to only about a fourth of those losses.
Follett highlights that monetary values perceived as significant in general contexts can be less material when viewed in relation to overall U.S. government finances.
Follett has previously highlighted financial risks in the energy sector. He reported that Ukrainian strikes on Russian gas facilities may disrupt gasoline exports from Moscow. In a separate report, he noted that green investment by energy companies fell to $25.7 billion in 2024, with further cuts expected.
