Ben Carlson: Baby boomers hold $90 trillion in wealth and 70 percent of U.S. stocks
Boomers hold most U.S. stocks, wealth

Ben Carlson, director of institutional asset management at Ritholtz Wealth Management, CFA, author, and investor, highlights that baby boomers in the U.S. control approximately $90 trillion in wealth, owning about 70 percent of stocks and half of the housing market wealth.

He questions what impact there could be on the stock market if baby boomers begin to sell assets to fund their retirement, asking whether this demographic shift could trigger a market downturn.

Carlson has recently highlighted that the S&P 493 outpaced both the S&P 500 and the Magnificent 7 stocks in 2024. He also noted that South Korea exceeded the S&P 500 in returns over the past decade. His comments add to a series of market observations tied to shifting performance among major equity indices.
