Michael Pettis, economist, professor of finance, nonresident senior fellow, author, macroeconomic analyst at Peking University and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, highlights that China's venture capital and private equity sectors are predominantly financed by state-affiliated investors.
According to Pettis, last year over 90% of committed capital in China’s private-equity market came from state-backed sources, rising sharply from just under 79% in 2021.
Pettis has previously critiqued the McKinsey Global Institute report for conflating issues around global trade imbalances. He has also highlighted concerns voiced by Stephen Roach that global imbalances could pose risks to China reminiscent of the 2008-09 economic crisis.
