Foreigners could trigger higher UST supply when USD strengthens, Luke Gromen warns
Foreigners may sell U.S. assets on USD strength

Luke Gromen, founder, president, macroeconomic analyst, investor at FFTT, LLC (Forest for the Trees), highlights the impact of a stronger U.S. dollar (USD) on foreign investors.

According to Gromen, when the USD becomes too strong, foreigners tend to sell U.S. assets, starting with those that are most liquid. He explains that if the U.S. government pursues fiscal austerity to reduce deficits, this may inadvertently lead to a surge in the supply of U.S. Treasury securities (USTs), as foreign holders liquidate their positions to protect their own interests.

Luke Gromen has previously argued that allowing gold prices to rise could help balance U.S. trade and weaken the dollar, potentially boosting Chinese consumption, according to a recent report. He has also noted that gold has outperformed major sectors during late-stage U.S. capital expenditure booms, as detailed in another analysis. Gromen’s recent commentary on U.S. dollar strength follows these earlier observations on asset performance and global trade dynamics.
