Treasury returns $175 million in payments

The U.S. Department of the Treasury returned $175 million in payments that otherwise would have gone to deceased individuals over the past year and expanded Do Not Pay program access to 99% of federal programs.

Scott Bessent, who identified himself as the 79th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and founder of Key Square Group, shared these figures as part of the department's focus on preventing fraud and improving oversight of federal payments.

Earlier this year, Bessent reported that the U.S. Treasury and IRS issued guidance targeting tax-driven investment strategies and prearranged section 351 transactions, according to a previous article. He also held a virtual meeting with Korea Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hyoung-il, where they discussed the U.S.-Republic of Korea economic and financial relationship, as covered in another report. Both initiatives reflect the department’s ongoing focus on compliance and international cooperation.
