Hedge Fund Strategy and Global Macroeconomics by Scott Bessent
Scott Bessent is the current United States Secretary of the Treasury, confirmed by the Senate in January 2025 with a bipartisan vote of 68–29. Prior to this appointment, he was the founder and CIO of Key Square Group, a macro hedge fund managing over $6 billion at its peak, and previously served as Chief Investment Officer at Soros Fund Management. Bessent is regarded as one of the most crypto-aware figures to ever lead the Treasury.
As of 2024, Bessent held up to $500,000 in crypto assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, which he fully divested in early 2025 to comply with conflict-of-interest rules. As Treasury Secretary, he spearheaded the GENIUS Act (Government-Enabled Network for Interbank and Unitary Stablecoins), a framework designed to regulate and domesticate stablecoin operations within U.S. financial infrastructure. The bill passed the House in April 2025 with 289 votes in favor.
Bessent also introduced the concept of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, where the U.S. federal government would custody seized or acquired BTC assets through regulated custodians. His public statements describe crypto as “one of the world’s defining technological changes,” and his policies have been cited in IMF briefings and Congressional hearings. He plays a pivotal role in shaping America's position in global crypto regulation, dollar stability, and institutional custody of digital assets.
