Bapex detects gas at Noakhali well, estimates 7 mmcf a day output
Gas found at Noakhali well

A newly drilled well in Noakhali adds to Bangladesh's latest efforts to raise domestic gas supply as Bapex confirms gas at Sundalpur South-1 in Companiganj. The initial estimate points to output of about 7 million cubic feet per day, although the well's commercial production potential still requires formal testing.

Highlights

  • Bapex detects gas at Sundalpur South-1 well in Noakhali on 2 November, with an early estimate of 7 mmcf a day output.
  • Bapex confirms gas presence by igniting the well post-drilling, pending drill stem testing to determine actual production rates.
  • Discovery follows a similar 7 mmcf a day estimate at Sundalpur-4 on 6 October, supporting increased exploration and potential domestic supply for Bangladesh.

Discovery details and testing process

As reported by The Business Standard, citing Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company, gas is detected on 2 November at the Sundalpur South-1 well in Rampur union of Noakhali's Companiganj upazila after drilling is completed. The state-run explorer says a preliminary assessment suggests the well may produce around 7 million cubic feet a day.

Rakibul Hasan, drilling in-charge at Bapex, says the presence of gas is confirmed after the gas is ignited at the well when drilling operations end. He says the flame is later extinguished because of excessive heat, and the Fire Service is notified so the flame can be reignited in its presence.

Bapex says the 7 mmcf a day figure remains an early estimate. The actual flow rate is to be determined through a drill stem test, which is expected to establish the well's production potential more precisely.

Implications for Bangladesh's gas field development

The latest discovery follows another find at the Sundalpur-4 appraisal-cum-development well in Baro Charigaon village of Nabipur union in Senbagh upazila on 6 October. At that time, Bapex estimates that the well could also supply around 7 mmcf of gas a day to the national grid.

The new result strengthens exploration activity within the same broader area in Noakhali, where Bapex has previously drilled Sundalpur-1, Sundalpur-2 and Sundalpur-3 in the Sirajpur area of Companiganj under the same gas field. If testing supports the initial estimate, the well could provide additional domestic supply for Bangladesh's energy sector.

Our earlier coverage of Malaysia’s proposed “user-pays” electricity pricing for large consumers explained plans to shift more power-supply costs toward data centres and other energy-intensive users as household bills rise. It also outlined the main drivers behind higher tariffs and described tools such as time-of-use pricing aimed at managing demand while limiting the impact on most households.
