Restructuring plan and company rationale
As reported by TechCrunch, citing The Verge, Squarespace is restructuring its organization and cutting approximately 19% of its global workforce, according to Jeff Seedman, a public relations specialist representing the company. Seedman says the changes are meant to simplify operations, sharpen priorities and help the company move faster as it positions itself for its next phase of growth. The reduction amounts to roughly 300 employees. Squarespace says the move is part of a broader organizational overhaul rather than an isolated cost-cutting step.
AI competition reshapes website building
Website creation is changing rapidly as generative AI tools make it easier for users to build functional front-end designs from simple prompts. That shift is altering competitive dynamics for traditional web hosting and site-building providers, as newer so-called vibe-coding platforms gain traction.Rivals and startups are drawing investment and deal interest in the segment. Wix bought Base44 for $80 million last year, while Lovable raised a $400 million Series C round in August at a $13.3 billion valuation; Google has also launched Stitch, a tool for quickly generating user interface designs.
Squarespace has been expanding its own AI offering. The company launched Blueprint in 2024 and recently announced Forma, an upcoming AI-native platform with a waitlist for users.
Founded in 2004, Squarespace went public in 2021 at a $10 billion valuation but later struggled to attract strong public market support. The company returned to private ownership through a $7 billion private equity deal in 2024.
Our earlier article examined how AI is raising the competitive baseline for companies, making “average” performance and traditional operating margins harder to sustain. We noted that firms are being pushed to revisit investment priorities, workforce skills, and decision-making processes, as businesses that adopt AI for productivity and automation can strengthen their positions while laggards risk losing relevance.
