Standard Chartered launches tokenized deposits for Hong Kong corporate clients
Hong Kong is becoming an early testing ground for bank-issued digital money as institutions widen the use of tokenized settlement infrastructure. Standard Chartered is now offering tokenized deposits to corporate clients in the market, allowing transfers around the clock through the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's EnsembleTX system.
Highlights
- Standard Chartered launched tokenized deposit services for Hong Kong corporate clients, marking the group's first market for this offering.
- Using the HKMA's EnsembleTX settlement rails, the service enables 24-hour real-time interbank transfers with final settlement in tokenized central bank money.
- China AMX and PantherTrade completed live transactions, though Standard Chartered did not disclose transaction values or the number of initial participating institutions.
Hong Kong rollout uses HKMA settlement rails
As reported by CoinDesk, citing the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, EnsembleTX now supports 24-hour settlement using tokenized central bank money and includes 12 banks and 20 other participating firms, expanding a pilot launched in November 2025. Standard Chartered is using that infrastructure alongside its own blockchain system to let participating banks move deposits between one another in real time, with final settlement in central bank money. The bank says Hong Kong is the first market in its group to offer the service to corporate clients. Unlike stablecoins, the product keeps funds as bank deposits rather than requiring businesses to convert them into separate digital tokens, which allows corporate users to transfer money outside normal banking hours.
China AMX and PantherTrade have completed live transactions through the service. Standard Chartered has not disclosed transaction values or the number of institutions that will initially have access.
Our earlier report on SEON’s expansion in the Philippines covered how the fraud-prevention firm is using its partnership with Exist Software Labs to move beyond fintech clients and win business with traditional banks, remittance providers, and payments firms. The piece highlighted that rapid digital payments growth and tighter compliance requirements are increasing demand for stronger risk-management and fraud controls across financial channels.
