Indiana hearing spotlights U.S. mining growth and safety agenda
Mining growth and safety focus

A field hearing in Indiana is focusing on how U.S. mining can expand while maintaining worker protections as federal policy shifts toward higher domestic output. The discussion comes as lawmakers and agencies point to new funding, regulatory changes, and recent safety results as signs of a sector in transition.

Highlights

  • President Trump issued three executive orders in 2023 to boost domestic mining production, aiming to enhance U.S. energy independence and industry growth.
  • The Department of Energy's $100 million Mine of the Future initiative, including $80 million for advanced mining technology, targets increased efficiency and reduced worker risk.
  • A 2024 MSHA silica rule faces scrutiny for high compliance costs, while the mining industry posted its lowest total injury rate on record in 2025 amid rising safety initiatives.

Indiana hearing outlines mining policy priorities

As reported by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Chairman Tim Walberg says the hearing in Fort Branch, Indiana is examining how to improve conditions for both miners and mine operators while supporting industry growth.

Walberg thanks Vincennes University for hosting the event and says the institution is helping train future workers in firefighting, manufacturing, workplace safety, and mining. He describes the U.S. mining industry as being at a turning point, with opportunities to expand under the Trump administration and Republican leadership in Congress.

He says President Trump issued three executive orders last year aimed at strengthening domestic mining production, which he calls important for U.S. energy independence. Walberg also says the Department of Labor and the committee are working to remove policies he views as burdensome and to support a regulatory environment that allows mining operations to grow.

Safety measures and federal support remain central

Walberg says the Department of Energy recently announced nearly $100 million through its Mine of the Future initiative, including $80 million for the development and commercialization of advanced mining technology. He says the initiative supports technologies that raise production efficiency while reducing worker exposure and risk.

He also points to the committee's July letter to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, seeking revisions to the respirable crystalline silica rule issued in 2024 by the Biden-Harris administration. According to Walberg, several provisions impose costly obligations on small and mid-sized operators and could force some businesses to shut down.

At the same time, he says worker protections must keep pace with production growth. Walberg highlights MSHA's Compliance Assistance in Safety and Health, or CASH, program created in July 2025 to support an expected increase in mining activity, and he notes that the agency continues to award millions of dollars in grants for mine safety and health training across the United States.

Walberg says those investments are producing results, citing the mining industry's lowest total injury rate on record in 2025. He adds that further cooperation between government and the private sector is still needed to strengthen workplace safety, workforce development, and the industry's long-term position.

Our earlier report on the May 1, 2026 U.S. executive order targeting Cuba’s GAESA network outlined how Washington expanded sanctions to include GAESA, a senior executive, and Moa Nickel SA tied to the island’s metals and mining sector. We noted that the designations block U.S.-linked property and prohibit U.S. transactions, while also increasing sanctions risk for non-U.S. entities dealing with the listed parties.
