G7 diplomacy centers on Ukraine talks

As reported by CNBC, Trump says Russia should make a deal to end its four-year war in Ukraine as he meets G7 leaders and Zelenskyy in France. The U.S. president also says he has already had a good meeting with the Ukrainian leader during Tuesday's summit agenda.

Trump attends a meeting with G7 leaders and Zelenskyy that runs for more than an hour, then holds a separate conversation on the sidelines with Zelenskyy and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ahead of a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Trump tells reporters that Russia and Ukraine have both suffered tremendous losses.

Trump also says he speaks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday and that the conversation covers the same issue. Calling the loss of life in the war ridiculous, he says he is going to do whatever he can.

European allies seek renewed U.S. support

Zelenskyy says in a post on X that substantive meetings are underway, with the key focus on strengthening Ukraine's air defenses and advancing diplomacy to make Russia end its war. He adds that peace is needed.

Trump's European allies use the high-stakes G7 talks to press for a renewed American commitment to Ukraine's war effort and a diplomatic path to ending the conflict. France, which holds the rotating G7 presidency, hosts the summit as attendees also try to reset transatlantic relations.

In our earlier coverage of the EU-U.S. trade agreement and tariff disputes, we explained how EU lawmakers approved a long-delayed pact aimed at averting a new round of U.S. car tariffs, while leaving several major trade conflicts unresolved. We noted that despite the deal, higher U.S. duties on items such as steel and aluminium derivatives and some consumer goods could persist, keeping business risks elevated and creating the potential for fresh tariff escalation.
