New York primaries test party influence and outside spending in key House races
Primary elections across New York, Maryland, Utah and South Carolina are testing how far party establishments, outside money and prominent political endorsements shape competitive House contests. The biggest focus is on New York, where Democratic battles over artificial intelligence policy, Israel and progressive organizing are turning several races into broader tests for both parties.

New York contests draw the sharpest focus
As reported by CNBC, Tuesday's primaries are centering national attention on New York, where several congressional races are becoming proxy fights over policy, ideology and the strength of political endorsements. The most closely watched contest is in New York's 12th District, where Democrats are selecting a nominee to succeed retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler in a heavily Democratic Manhattan seat. The field includes Assemblymen Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, along with Jack Schlossberg, grandson of President John F. Kennedy. Bores' record on artificial intelligence regulation, and the outside money surrounding that issue, is helping turn the race into a broader debate over how aggressively Democrats should regulate a fast-growing part of the economy.
Elsewhere in the state, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is trying to show that his democratic socialist movement can extend beyond his own campaign and influence the makeup of Congress. In New York's 13th District, Rep. Adriano Espaillat is facing a challenge from Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is campaigning against corporate money and U.S. policy toward Israel, while pro-Israel political action committees including United Democracy Project are backing Espaillat.
Broader party tests extend to Maryland and Utah
New York's upstate Republican primary to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik is also serving as a test of President Donald Trump's endorsement power against the local GOP establishment. That race is being watched for signs of whether national influence can outweigh locally rooted party networks in candidate selection. In Maryland, Democrats are choosing a successor to former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in a crowded contest with 24 candidates, while Rep. April McClain Delaney is facing a self-funded challenge from former Rep. David Trone. In Utah, newly drawn House maps are reshaping primary contests in both parties, highlighting how redistricting is altering electoral calculations and potentially creating openings for Democrats.
Our earlier article on Labour’s leadership transition after Keir Starmer’s resignation explained how Andy Burnham emerged as the frontrunner for a rapid handover that could make him prime minister as soon as July 17. We also noted that some Labour MPs were weighing whether to trigger a contested race to force more scrutiny of the next leader’s policy agenda, rather than allowing an uncontested transfer of power.
