BT Group needs new catalyst to break above key resistance
BT Group remains in a consolidation phase. Despite recent news surrounding its pension fund, strong cash flow and dividend payments continue to support interest from long-term investors.
One of the main topics of the week was news that BT's pension fund wrote off £300 million following the impairment of its stake in Thames Water. Despite the size of the loss, management emphasized that the fund remains well diversified and that the write-off should not have a significant impact on the upcoming three-year pension scheme valuation.
Additional investor attention was drawn to BT Group's meeting with analysts ahead of the next pension fund valuation. Citi noted that the presentation contained little new information and did not change the company's investment case. According to the bank, the main constraint on BT's growth remains intense competition in the UK fixed-line market rather than the condition of its pension fund.
Bullish divergence keeps recovery hopes alive

As mentioned in our previous analysis, BT-A shares continue to trade within a relatively wide GBX 190–200 range. As long as the price remains inside this zone, the medium-term direction of the stock remains uncertain.
The RSI (14) continues to form a bullish divergence. A similar signal appeared previously, but it was only confirmed after nearly two months. The current divergence has been developing since early June.
For BT Group to resume its upward movement, the stock will likely need a strong fundamental catalyst and higher trading volumes.
Stable dividends support BT's outlook
Despite the negative headlines surrounding the pension fund, BT's investment story has changed little.
The company continues to generate stable cash flow, expand its fiber infrastructure, and remains one of the more attractive dividend names in the UK market, with a yield above 4%.
However, the stock's near-term performance will likely depend less on one-off news and more on the company's ability to accelerate revenue growth and maintain operational efficiency in a highly competitive market.
