OCC names Michael Bodson as next chairman as Stephen Luparello plans January 2027 retirement
OCC leadership transition ahead

Leadership changes are being set well ahead of schedule at OCC, the clearing house for equity derivatives, with a board transition planned for January 2027. The move pairs Stephen Luparello's retirement as chairman with the appointment of former DTCC chief Michael Bodson as his successor, while OCC also expands its board with two new member directors.

Highlights

  • OCC appoints Michael Bodson, former DTCC president and CEO, as next chairman to succeed Stephen Luparello, who retires in January 2027 after nine years.
  • OCC expands its board by electing Matthew Hulsizer of PEAK6 Investments and Brian P. Donnelly of RQD Clearing, adding expertise across trading, clearing, and fintech.
  • OCC advances its transformation with the Ovation clearing platform now open for scenario testing, enhancing risk management and processing as options and futures markets grow.

Board transition and succession plan

As reported by OCC, citing OCC, Luparello is set to step down as board chairman in January 2027 after nine years on the board, but he will remain involved as an adviser to directors.

Chief executive Andrej Bolkovic says Luparello has been a key adviser to management during a period of strong growth in options and futures trading. He says OCC has advanced its broader transformation under Luparello's tenure, including development of the new Ovation clearing platform, which is now open for scenario testing with market participants.

Bodson joins the board as a public director and is due to succeed Luparello as chairman. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. from 2012 to 2022 and held earlier senior roles there, including chief operating officer, after spending two decades at Morgan Stanley in operations and financial control roles across the U.S., Japan and Asia.

Bodson says OCC's risk management and processing capabilities will become even more important as markets undergo faster change. Luparello says Bodson's record at DTCC shows disciplined leadership during periods of market stress and says OCC stands to benefit from his experience in market structure, operational risk and regulatory oversight.

Additional directors and market infrastructure focus

OCC also elects Matthew Hulsizer and Brian P. Donnelly as new member directors, broadening the board with executives from trading, clearing and financial technology businesses.

Hulsizer is co-founder and managing partner of PEAK6 Investments, an Austin-based financial services and technology firm that grew from an options trading operation into a multibillion-dollar business with interests including PEAK6 Capital Management, PEAK6 Strategic Capital and Apex Fintech Solutions. OCC says his experience spans more than 200 created or backed businesses, including ventures in options, clearing and AI.

Donnelly joins from RQD Clearing, where he is founder and chairman, and also serves as founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Optimal Market Technologies, while also being a founder and director of Volant Trading. His earlier career included roles at Goldman Sachs, UBS and Hull Trading Co., and OCC says his background in market structure and clearing initiatives should support the organisation as the financial industry continues to evolve.

UK corporate governance is increasingly under market scrutiny as strong board standards contrast with the underperformance of many London-listed companies, creating openings for activists and private equity to push for efficiency and value creation. We previously noted how this dynamic is playing out in practice, with takeover and stake-building interest rising where investors see room to improve margins, capital allocation and operational discipline.
