Stablecoin growth spurs IMF oversight call amid unchecked crypto expansion

Recent International Monetary Fund reports highlighted that Brazil's crypto market has seen rapid growth in USD-pegged stablecoins since 2017, which now account for nearly 89% of reported crypto volume. The IMF noted that stablecoin and cross-border crypto transactions are expanding at a pace much faster than traditional capital flows and are more sensitive to global financial shocks. The ongoing surge, occurring largely outside Brazil’s regulated foreign exchange channels, has led the IMF to recommend stronger oversight, clearer custody rules, and better regulatory coordination to address the growing impact of crypto flows on Brazil’s financial system, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, notes sustained bearish sentiment in USD/BRL as the pair trades below key moving averages with diverging momentum signals. He highlights capital outflows related to the surge of USD-pegged stablecoins and greater regulatory attention as fundamental risk factors for the Real. Kharitonov cautions that the dominance of algorithmic indicators like MACD and overbought conditions in Stochastic RSI suggest volatility spikes are likely, but no clear reversal has formed. He sees the technical landscape as fragmented, underscoring weak buyer conviction despite periodic upticks. "Until structure shifts above R$5.1074 or regulatory clarity supports the Real, downside caution prevails for USD/BRL," he states.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees the rapid adoption of USD-pegged stablecoins as a structural opportunity for Brazil’s financial system. He believes growing institutional focus and IMF engagement will drive regulatory modernization, boosting long-term market stability. Karapetjanc expects the current volatility to offer tactical setups, with a 76% probability of upward movement indicating positive sentiment. He remains confident in the market’s ability to adapt. "Further growth is on the table as regulatory improvements unlock more upside for USD/BRL participants," he asserts.
Sholanke Dele, market strategist, adopts a skeptical view on the recent trends in USD/BRL. He points to fragile sentiment, driven by cross-border stablecoin flows that happen outside traditional channels and amplify vulnerability to global shocks. Dele warns that unclear regulatory responses could increase downside risk if implementation lags. "Without decisive regulatory action, confidence in USD/BRL risk management remains low," he says.

Bearish momentum persists as technical signals diverge on direction

USD/BRL is positioned below its 20-day (R$5.1074), 50-day (R$5.1269), and 200-day (R$5.1708) moving averages, indicating seller dominance across short, medium, and long-term horizons. The nearest resistance is at R$5.1074, with support at R$5.0884. The matching of the 50-day and 200-day averages underscores a persistent bearish structure, and the Ichimoku Kijun at R$5.1395 forms an additional ceiling. Momentum indicators send mixed signals: MACD flags a strong sell, and ADX is neutral, pointing to a weak downtrend. RSI and CCI, both near 54, suggest intraday buy signals, even as Stochastic RSI is fully overbought at 100. Bull/Bear Power is slightly positive, indicating buyers briefly took control, but overall, technical signals diverge, leaving the tone cautious.

Earlier, analysts noted that USD/BRL faced persistent bearish pressure, with seller dominance evident despite brief episodes of short-term recovery. The current environment deepens this view by highlighting the impact of surging stablecoin adoption and regulatory scrutiny in Brazil, positioning the pair for heightened volatility as traders watch for a decisive break outside the R$5.0591–R$5.1427 range.
