Malachyte’s $10M AI leap

Former Spotify engineers are applying recommendation technology built for music streaming to e-commerce, aiming to help online stores respond to shopper intent in real time. The new startup, Malachyte, says its system adapts product displays based on live signals such as clicks, searches and browsing context rather than relying mainly on purchase history.

Highlights

  • Malachyte raised $10 million in seed funding co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient to expand and hire for its AI shopping platform.
  • The Malachyte platform, launched with Fun.com in late 2025 and available to Shopify merchants since June 2026, uses real-time behavioral analysis for personalized recommendations.
  • Malachyte targets e-commerce inefficiencies by leveraging live session signals and contextual factors to drive conversion uplift beyond demographic- or history-based personalization.

Funding and product rollout plans

As first reported by TechCrunch, Malachyte says it has raised $10 million in seed funding to scale distribution and hire additional product and commercial leaders. The round is co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with participation from Harpoon Ventures.

The company is founded by Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson and Shivaditya Sinha, who previously worked on Spotify's behavioral intelligence infrastructure. Their system, called Vector AI at Spotify, is designed to predict user intent and next actions rather than relying only on past behavior, and the founders say it powers about 90% of Spotify's recommendations to its 800 million users.

Malachyte says it is building real-time, intent-aware shopping experiences through what it calls a two-headed Vector AI system. The platform is designed to predict which product a shopper wants next, learn broader taste preferences and continuously refine recommendations as users interact with a storefront.

The technology has been under development and testing since 2024, and the company says it worked with more than 20 enterprise customers across travel, grocery and retail before narrowing its focus to e-commerce. The platform first went live in the fall of 2025 with Fun.com, and since June 2026 it has been generally available to Shopify merchants through a native integration, while larger retailers can connect through an API.

Retail personalization and market implications

Malachyte is targeting a common weakness in online retail, where personalization often depends on historical purchases, demographic groupings or logged-in user profiles. That approach can leave first-time visitors with generic storefronts and returning shoppers with suggestions tied more to what they bought before than to what they want in the current session.

Motwani says the platform instead treats actions such as hovering, clicking, scrolling, refining a search or adding an item to a cart as live signals that can reshape recommendations immediately. He also argues that contextual factors, including device type, time of day and referral source, remain underused by retailers even though they can indicate different customer intent.

That positioning places Malachyte in a growing segment of e-commerce software focused on improving conversion and merchandising efficiency through AI. If the company can show that real-time behavioral analysis lifts sales for merchants, its offering could appeal to retailers seeking alternatives to broader segmentation tools and static recommendation engines.

Our earlier article on the AI-led S&P 500 rally explained how the index’s move was unusually concentrated, with a small group of AI-linked mega-cap tech stocks accounting for the bulk of the gains and pushing the benchmark to fresh highs. We also noted that traders were watching the U.S. payrolls report, but that only a major surprise was likely to change expectations for the Fed’s next rate move.
