Steve Cohen: Decision to not seek reelection in new U.S. House district
Cohen not seeking U.S. House seat

Steve Cohen announced he will not seek reelection in the newly redrawn U.S. House districts, which have altered the boundaries of the 9th District after nearly two decades of his representation. Cohen indicated that unless the courts restore the current district lines until 2028—an outcome he views as unlikely—he will not remain a candidate. He described his nearly five decades representing Memphis as an honor.

Cohen has previously joined Tennessee Democratic leaders in opposing GOP measures that he said threatened Memphis’s representation and future in the state, according to a 2023 report. He has also responded to public debate over Tennessee government's loyalty to a controversial national figure, addressing concerns in an earlier analysis. Cohen has served as the Memphis-area representative for nearly twenty years.
