Early bitcoin multisig was rarely used

Early versions of bitcoin multisig were bare, clunky, and saw limited use before the introduction of more advanced solutions, according to Stephan Livera, Head of Education at Swan Bitcoin and podcast host. Livera stated that Satoshi did not require advanced security features, as practical multisig solutions had not yet been developed. He added that P2SH in 2012 made multisig usable, with further improvements coming later through P2WSH and Taproot.

Livera has previously cautioned that relying on a single device for wallet security can increase risks, recommending multisig setups to enhance protection in his article on wallet security. In another report, he highlighted that blockchain technology processes $5.75 trillion in settlement per quarter, or about $62 billion daily, granting global access to large-scale transactions. These earlier observations provide context to his recent remarks on the evolution of bitcoin multisig.
