U.S. stock futures were mixed but broadly resilient on Tuesday after the previous session’s technology-led rally, as investors weighed falling oil prices against continuing geopolitical uncertainty. Attention was shifting toward President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly and signs of possible movement toward diplomacy with Iran.
Highlights
- S&P 500 futures rose 0.09% in early trading.
- Dow futures gained 0.44%, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.03%.
- Lower oil prices eased some concerns about inflation and interest rates.
S&P 500 futures stood at 7,840.25, up 0.09%, while Dow futures rose 0.44% to 52,707. Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.03% to 30,776, according to the latest market data provided. The moves followed Monday’s rally, when technology and semiconductor shares lifted U.S. equities as oil prices declined, Bloomberg reported.
Falling oil eases pressure on markets
Energy prices remained an important driver of sentiment. Brent crude dropped below $99 a barrel after earlier gains, as investors assessed indications that disrupted Gulf supply routes could begin returning to normal.
Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. blockade is lifted, according to the report. Saudi Arabia was also testing a restart of its East-West pipeline, potentially allowing more crude to reach the Red Sea export terminal at Yanbu.
Lower oil prices can ease concerns about renewed inflation because energy costs feed into transportation, manufacturing, and consumer prices. Treasury yields moved lower alongside crude, with the 10-year yield falling about two basis points to 4.93%.
AI rally meets geopolitical uncertainty
Technology shares entered Tuesday after a strong session. Gains in major technology and semiconductor companies had pushed the S&P 500 to a one-month high, supported by renewed enthusiasm around artificial intelligence.
Premarket trading was less uniform. Microsoft gained 1.68%, while an exchange-traded fund tracking semiconductor stocks fell more than 1%, pointing to a more cautious start after the previous session’s advance.
Investors were also preparing for Trump’s UN speech. Markets are watching developments involving Iran because diplomatic progress could affect energy supplies, inflation expectations, and bond yields. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that a meeting between Trump and his Iranian counterpart was not currently planned.
Another focus is the upcoming meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Officials from both countries have been holding talks ahead of the summit, while investors are watching what happens when the current U.S.-China trade truce expires in November.
For U.S. equities, lower oil prices are easing some inflation pressure, while enthusiasm around AI continues to support technology shares. Elevated Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty remain important constraints as investors wait for clearer signals from diplomacy and energy markets.
