Hawaiian Electric closes Waikiki lane

Hawaiian Electric will close the far-left eastbound lane along Kalakaua Avenue between Lewers Street and Seaside Avenue in Waikiki as crews replace and upgrade underground cables.

The closure begins today and continues through Friday, with the work also impacting the adjacent sidewalk in the construction zone while crews operate in a hand hole. Motorists and pedestrians in the area should expect traffic congestion and detours. The utility urges the public to stay updated on further developments related to the infrastructure upgrade.

Hawaiian Electric has recently warned that storms could delay outage repairs on Oahu, with some damaged infrastructure potentially requiring rebuilding, according to a company alert. The utility has also reported progress toward its renewable energy goals, reaching a 37 percent renewable portfolio standard for 2025 as outlined in its latest update. These initiatives form part of ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen Oahu’s power systems.
