Hawaiian Electric upgrades prompt lane closures

Hawaiian Electric will resume upgrades of underground utility equipment in the Ala Moana area starting Monday, April 20, continuing through Friday, May 1, excluding weekends.

The work will require lane narrowing or closures along Makaloa Street, Kaheka Street, Kapiolani Boulevard, and Mahukona Street as the company replaces and upgrades underground cables. The scheduled infrastructure improvements aim to enhance the reliability of electrical service in the heavily trafficked district. Residents and commuters are advised to expect traffic disruptions and to follow posted signage during construction hours.

Hawaiian Electric has recently adjusted repair methods for Oahu outages after weather conditions prevented helicopter access, maintaining backup power for affected Honolulu areas, according to a prior report. The company has also delayed restoration in parts of Oahu as substations and lines undergo safety inspections following recent flooding, based on an earlier update. The utility continues to coordinate infrastructure projects alongside ongoing restoration efforts.
