Anthropic export curbs follow Amazon-linked warning over AI model security
Anthropic AI access curbed

U.S. restrictions on access to Anthropic’s most powerful AI models are emerging after a fast-moving dispute over whether one of the company’s systems could aid cyberattacks. The action also highlights how quickly Washington can limit distribution of domestic AI products, with spillover effects reaching decentralized AI-linked crypto tokens.

Highlights

  • U.S. officials ordered Anthropic to pull its Fable 5 AI model after Amazon researchers demonstrated it could be prompted to return cyberattack information.
  • The White House imposed export controls on Anthropic after the company did not comply with safety requests, but indicated the ban may be lifted if vulnerabilities are fixed.
  • Bittensor jumped 23.9%, Venice Token gained 16%, and Near Protocol rose 6.2% as investors bet on decentralized AI alternatives amid the Anthropic crackdown.

White House response to model safety concerns

As first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy contacted senior U.S. government officials on Thursday after Amazon researchers found a way to prompt Anthropic’s Fable 5 model into returning information that could be used for cyberattacks. The report says warnings from at least five other firms added to the pressure, prompting White House officials to assess the threat and reach out to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, says the administration then issued the export control reluctantly after Anthropic did not cooperate with what he described as a reasonable safety request to fix the jailbreak issue. The episode explains the chain of events behind the U.S. directive that forced Anthropic to pull its new model from the public on Friday night.

In a Friday blog post, Anthropic says it believes the U.S. directive stems from a misunderstanding about the risks posed by a non-universal jailbreak described in an unnamed report. The company says it is working to restore access for users, while Sacks says the administration hopes Anthropic remediates the safety issue so the export control can be lifted and Fable can return to general release as soon as possible.

Amazon does not confirm whether it spoke with government officials specifically about Anthropic’s models. A spokesperson says governments often seek the company’s counsel on potential security risks given its role as a major cloud provider to private and public sector customers, but the company does not share details of such discussions.

Market implications for AI and crypto

The dispute is also serving as a live test of the U.S. government’s ability to shut off access to U.S.-based AI models on short notice. That prospect appears to support investor interest in decentralized AI projects that position themselves as alternatives to centrally controlled model access.

Bittensor’s native token rises 23.9% over the past 24 hours, while Venice Token gains 16% and Near Protocol advances 6.2%. The moves suggest traders are treating the Anthropic crackdown as a catalyst for platforms built around distributed AI infrastructure, monetization and uncensored model access.

We previously reported on Anthropic pulling its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after a U.S. government directive tied to national security and concerns about a potential jailbreak bypassing safety controls. That earlier piece also highlighted the growing policy clash over how frontier AI systems should be reviewed or restricted, including Anthropic’s argument that any shutdown should follow a transparent statutory process rather than an ad hoc order.
