Trump accepts Qatar jet for Air Force One amid ethics scrutiny
Trump’s Qatar jet deal

The U.S. presidential aircraft fleet is undergoing a high-profile change as Donald Trump accepts a $400 million jet from Qatar for use as Air Force One. The decision comes while Boeing's replacement program remains delayed and is drawing criticism over possible conflicts between official duties and Trump's personal interests.

Highlights

  • Donald Trump accepted a $400 million jet from Qatar as a new Air Force One, replacing an aging aircraft amid ongoing Boeing delays.
  • The aircraft, featuring a new design and equipped with Starlink, will debut in a July 4 Washington DC flyover for the 250th U.S. Independence anniversary.
  • Democrats intensify scrutiny over ethics, citing Trump's business ties to Qatar and plans to use the decommissioned jet in his presidential library.

Aircraft upgrade and rollout plans

As reported by Financial Times, Trump says the jumbo red, white and blue aircraft will soon enter service as Air Force One after being accepted from Qatar.

Speaking at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, he says foreign leaders have better and newer planes and calls it "a little ridiculous" that the U.S. president flies in an aircraft that is a few decades old. He highlights styling details including a "wavy beautiful flag" on the plane's vertical stabiliser instead of the traditional straight flag, thanks Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and says Elon Musk will be pleased that the aircraft is to be equipped with Starlink.

Trump also says the plane has been turned into a flying White House with an unprecedented level of luxury. He adds that the aircraft will replace one of the current Air Force One jets, while the long-delayed Boeing replacement remains outstanding.

According to Trump, the new plane is set to lead a flyover of Washington DC on July 4 during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of United States independence from Great Britain.

Ethics concerns and political fallout

The acceptance of the aircraft is intensifying scrutiny over the boundary between public office and private benefit. A decommissioned Air Force One is expected to become the centrepiece of Trump's presidential library, and he previously says the Qatari plane would be transferred there after he leaves office.

Democrats criticise the acceptance of the jet, valued at $400 million, as corrupt. The criticism also follows a deal struck by Trump's family business with a Qatari state-owned company after he returned to the presidency last year.

Trump defends the arrangement as a cost-saving move for the military and taxpayers. In a Truth Social post last year, he says taxpayers should not have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for an aircraft that can be received free from a country that wants to reward the U.S. for a job well done.

We noted that investment-grade ratings from major agencies could broaden demand, while the deal underscores how SpaceX’s growth narrative now includes heavy AI spending alongside its core businesses like Starlink.
