Google set to unveil AI upgrades at I/O conference
Google unveils AI upgrades

Google opens its annual I/O developer conference in Mountain View on Tuesday as it seeks to build on renewed momentum in artificial intelligence. The event is expected to highlight updated Gemini features for consumers and software developers, a key audience for the company's enterprise AI push.

Highlights

  • Google will unveil a refreshed Gemini model and new AI-powered features at its I/O conference, integrating Gemini with services like Chrome, Gmail, and YouTube.
  • Alphabet projects capital expenditures of $180 billion to $190 billion in 2025 to support increased AI infrastructure, amid total revenue of $402.8 billion for the year.
  • Google acquired Windsurf for $2.4 billion in 2025 to advance its coding assistant Antigravity, targeting enterprise AI revenue and direct competition with Anthropic's Claude Code.

Gemini update and product strategy

As reported by Reuters, the conference is Google's first I/O gathering since a major Gemini update last winter helped the company regain ground in the AI race. Sundar Pichai is expected to use the event to present a refreshed version of Gemini along with new products and features built around the model's capabilities.

Google is trying to turn its broad consumer footprint into an AI advantage by linking Gemini to personalized data across services including Chrome, Gmail and YouTube. The company is also embedding generative AI into search while expanding its Gemini chatbot to compete more directly with ChatGPT.

Search remains Alphabet's largest revenue engine, helping drive total revenue of $402.8 billion in 2025. At the same time, the company is increasing investment in AI infrastructure, with capital expenditures expected to reach $180 billion to $190 billion this year.

Developer focus and market implications

Recent advertising growth, including from search ads, has helped ease investor concerns that AI could weaken Google's core products and erode its market position. Alphabet has also recently approached Nvidia in market value, adding pressure to show that its AI strategy can support further growth.

Google is expected to devote part of the conference to business users, especially software developers who have become an important source of enterprise AI revenue. In 2025, the company hired key staff from AI coding startup Windsurf in a $2.4 billion deal to strengthen work on its coding assistant Antigravity, which competes with Anthropic's Claude Code.

Another focus is likely to be AI agents, digital assistants designed to carry out more complex tasks without a prompt. Google executives, including Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, have recently signaled that major coding-related announcements are being held back for I/O.

Our earlier article on Alphabet’s push toward the $400 level highlighted how investor optimism has been driven by accelerating AI momentum, led by resilient Google Cloud growth and rising demand for AI infrastructure. We also noted that expectations for Google I/O 2026 center on deeper Gemini integration and expanded TPU-backed compute capacity, even as markets watch higher capex and the need for clearer AI monetization.
