  • The resolution, cosponsored by 27 senators and 34 representatives, urges support for Afghan allies at Camp As Sayliyah and denounces the administration's Afrikaners resettlement prioritization as unjust.

Resolution targets refugee program suspension

As reported by Senate Committee on Finance Minority Press, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Ted Lieu introduce a World Refugee Day resolution that reaffirms U.S. support for refugees and forcibly displaced people. The resolution is cosponsored by 27 senators and 34 representatives, reflecting broader backing among Democratic lawmakers.

The measure calls on President Trump to lift the indefinite suspension of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. It also urges the administration to support the resettlement of Afghan allies and relatives of Department of Defense personnel who remain stranded at Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar, while increasing humanitarian and development assistance for displacement crises.

The resolution also denounces the administration's prioritization of Afrikaners for U.S. resettlement, describing that approach as politically motivated and unjust. Shaheen says the administration has turned away from a longstanding U.S. legacy, while Lieu describes refugee resettlement and targeted foreign aid as strategic investments that strengthen national security and foreign policy goals.

Political and humanitarian implications

June 20 is designated by the United Nations as World Refugee Day, and the resolution frames the U.S. refugee system as a longstanding pillar of humanitarian policy since the Refugee Admissions Program was established in 1980. Lawmakers argue that restoring refugee admissions capacity carries both moral and national interest benefits for the United States.

A coalition of advocacy groups, including Church World Service, Refugee Council USA, Human Rights First, AfghanEvac, HIAS and Refugees International, backs the measure. Supporters say current refugee and travel restrictions are limiting access to protection at a time when displacement remains elevated worldwide, and they are urging Congress to push for a broader reopening of refugee resettlement pathways.

Congressional efforts to curb lawmakers’ use of prediction markets have been gaining momentum, as we previously reported. Our earlier article outlined a proposal to bar members of Congress and their families from betting on policy, politics and elections, with penalties aimed at deterring wagers made using insider knowledge. It also noted the measure’s uncertain path in the Senate, where broader political support remains a key hurdle.
