S&P 500 tests technical support as Middle East tensions cloud market outlook
S&P 500 faces uncertainty

After struggling to build momentum since mid-May, the S&P 500 is hovering near closely watched technical levels despite remaining just over 1% below its June 2 record close. The index regains its 50-day moving average and a key weekly Gann line on Tuesday, but traders are still watching whether renewed geopolitical stress pushes it toward fresh selling or back toward record highs.

Highlights

  • The S&P 500 closed at 7,509.20 on Tuesday, recovering above its 50-day moving average (7,470) and weekly Gann line (7,485) after two consecutive breaches.
  • Bulls require a close above the July 10 peak of 7,579.83 to target further highs, with 8,000 identified as the next major resistance level.
  • A drop below the July 8 low of 7,421.82 would increase selling pressure, with key supports at 7,294.18, 7,237.85, and the rising 100-day moving average near 7,161.

Technical levels shape the next market move

As reported by Reuters, the benchmark index posts two straight closes below its 50-day moving average last Friday and Monday, only the second and third such breaches since early April, before recovering above that level on Tuesday.

With a Tuesday close of 7,509.20, the S&P 500 also moves back above the weekly Gann line after slipping under it at the end of last week. Data supplied by LSEG puts the 50-day moving average around 7,470, while the weekly Gann line stands near 7,485.

Technical analysts track moving averages to filter out short-term volatility and judge the underlying trend. Gann lines, which combine price and time, are used to identify areas where buying or selling pressure may intensify and where turning points can emerge.

Resistance at 7,579.83, support at 7,421.82

Bulls still need a close above the July 10 peak of 7,579.83 to reopen the path toward record territory. If fresh highs are confirmed, 8,000 becomes the next major level in focus.

On the downside, a break below the July 8 low of 7,421.82 would signal renewed selling pressure. Support then comes in near 7,294.18 and 7,237.85, followed by the rising 100-day moving average around 7,161.

A deeper retreat could bring the 7,000 level, along with the rising 200-day moving average, back into view. Resurgent tensions in the Middle East remain the main wild card for investors and could determine whether the index resumes its advance or slips into a broader pullback.

In our earlier coverage of renewed Middle East tensions and their market impact, we described how escalating U.S.–Iran friction and consecutive strikes lifted risk sentiment and pushed oil prices higher, keeping investors cautious. We also noted that shifting expectations for Federal Reserve policy left Treasury yields relatively steady, with rate-hike probabilities moving alongside incoming data and geopolitics.
