MTN to boost 5G and LTE performance across Gauteng

According to MyBroadband, MTN South Africa plans to spend R300 million ($16.8 million) to upgrade its network in Gauteng, the country’s most developed province.

The upgrade is part of a broader national investment of R4.5 billion (over $250 million) aimed at improving telecommunications infrastructure across South Africa.

A significant portion of the budget will go toward acquiring and building new base stations, enhancing network performance, and increasing capacity at over 70 sites.

Bridging the digital divide

MTN stated that the network upgrades will be completed by the end of 2025. The investment will enable 5G rollout and improved LTE performance. The goal is to provide more people, businesses, and communities in the province — centered around Johannesburg — with access to reliable, high-speed digital services.

Machaba Dlamini, MTN SA’s Regional Executive for Gauteng, added that the modernization will also improve battery systems, site security, and energy supply, including backup generator availability.

“Our investment in network infrastructure plays a vital role in connecting the unconnected and building a more inclusive digital landscape across South Africa,” said Dlamini.

The announcement of the Gauteng budget comes shortly after MTN committed R480 million (about $27 million) to upgrade its network in KwaZulu-Natal in 2025.
