Defense meeting sets scope for broader partnership

As reported by BusinessWorld Online, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Lipton says Washington remains committed to the Philippines and to a shared vision of a peaceful and secure Indo-Pacific region after Hegseth’s talks with Southeast Asian counterparts.

In a statement on Monday, Lipton says Hegseth’s leadership of the Department of War and his frequent engagements with Southeast Asian partners show the Trump administration’s determination to strengthen alliances, deepen regional cooperation and ensure that peace is backed by strength. Hegseth is in Cebu from Oct. 27 to 29 for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus, where he proposes an “ambitious” U.S.-ASEAN defense framework to guide joint initiatives in the coming years.

Economic agenda accompanies security outreach

The U.S. Embassy also emphasizes the need for an equally strong economic partnership with Manila, saying it supports Philippine economic development and views reciprocal, mutually beneficial trade as essential to shared prosperity.

Lipton says in a Facebook post on Sunday that the SelectUSA program brings next-generation Filipino business leaders together with top U.S. businesses for growth. He names Hans “Chico” Sy Jr., president of SM Engineering Design and Development Corp., and Mariana E. Zobel de Ayala, a director of Globe Telecom, among the Filipino business figures involved, and says efforts are under way to bring major investments to both the U.S. and the Philippines.

In our earlier article on the Philippines’ planned sovereign bond market reforms, we explained how a new pricing convention for peso government bonds and expected inclusion in J.P. Morgan’s emerging-market bond index could widen the investor base and improve liquidity. We also noted that these market upgrades alone won’t automatically translate into stronger productive investment unless they are reinforced by credible fiscal policy and broader reforms that deepen domestic capital markets and improve the overall business environment.
