IPO structure and institutional backing
As reported by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the offering lists 45 per cent of Banque du Caire’s common shares on the Egyptian Exchange and brings combined multilateral investment in the IPO to U.S.$200 million. The transaction is positioned as a milestone for Egypt’s state ownership and privatisation programme, while also aiming to deepen local capital markets and widen private-sector equity participation in banking. The EBRD says its participation supports Banque du Caire’s shift to listed-company standards, with a focus on stronger corporate governance, climate, environmental and social practices, digitalisation and cybersecurity. In addition to the equity investment, the lender is providing technical cooperation to strengthen the bank’s digital transformation, cybersecurity and environmental and social risk-management capabilities.
Francis Malige, EBRD managing director for financial institutions, says the IPO is a landmark transaction for the bank and a strategic step for Egypt’s broader reform agenda. Hussein Abaza, Banque du Caire’s chief executive officer and managing director, says the listing opens a new phase for the bank and reflects investor confidence in its long-term strategy.
Banking sector implications in Egypt
Banque du Caire ranks as Egypt’s fourth-largest bank by total assets as of 30 June 2026, excluding the state-owned Banque Misr and National Bank of Egypt. The bank operates across corporate, SME, retail, microfinance, private banking, investment banking and brokerage segments, giving the IPO broad relevance across the country’s financial sector. For Egypt, the deal adds momentum to efforts to attract institutional capital and broaden private ownership in major state-linked assets. The EBRD is already a significant investor in the country, with more than 16 billion euros invested in 238 projects since it began operations there in 2012.
Our earlier article on India’s disinvestment programme explained that most proceeds since FY 2016 have come from market-based routes such as ETFs, public issues and buybacks, while strategic sales have contributed only a small share. It also highlighted how the planned IDBI Bank stake sale could become a standout transaction large enough to materially lift annual divestment receipts and help the government get closer to its targets.
