Cash flow targets stabilize sentiment after dividend reduction

TELUS recently enacted a 55% dividend reduction in July, targeting greater cash retention and enhanced financial stability. Management estimates approximately $1.8 billion in free cash flow for 2026, with the lower dividend level projected to cost about $1.2 billion annually and result in a more sustainable payout ratio. The company also clarified to Optik TV customers that changes in hockey broadcasts are due to a new Rogers-led contract, not a TELUS decision.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees TELUS’s sharp dividend cut as a reactive step to underlying financial pressures rather than a preemptive strategy. He notes the price remains structurally bearish below the 200-day average despite temporary upticks and mixed indicators. Fundamental risks linger due to ongoing high costs, justifying cautious sentiment. Short-term overbought signals and the risk of volatility add further doubt to any sustained rally. "Given the weak long-term trend and a challenged payout model, I view any strength as fragile until core finances materially improve," Kharitonov says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, highlights the decisive dividend cut as a strong move to boost future cash flow and ensure financial stability. He sees management’s projected improvements and cost control as setting the stage for renewed institutional interest. The recent price recovery above key moving averages signals the potential for a return to bullish momentum if resistance is breached. Karapetjanc believes investor confidence is beginning to recover as the new payout ratio takes hold. "I expect further growth as the company’s value proposition strengthens — this renewed structure offers attractive setups for forward-looking investors," he states.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, notes TELUS is caught in a tight range between support and resistance, with overbought oscillators signaling caution. Short-term momentum is positive above C$12.43, but exhaustion could trigger sharp reversals if broader sentiment sours. Turakhiya sees trading setups on both sides, with sideways action likely unless clear breakouts occur. "I advise watching for quick moves and being nimble — news-driven sentiment can spark either follow-through or rapid fades near these technical levels," he comments.

Buy signals contrast with overbought risks as bullish momentum faces resistance

TELUS is trading above its 20-day (C$11.76) and 50-day (C$12.37) moving averages, but remains below its 200-day moving average (C$15.76). This pattern shows a recovery in the short and medium term while underlying long-term sentiment remains bearish. Resistance appears at C$12.83 and support at C$12.43. Momentum indicators are mixed: the MACD is neutral, the ADX shows a buy signal, and both RSI and CCI are overbought, as is the Stochastic RSI. Bull/Bear Power at 0.38 reflects intraday buyer dominance, yet overbought readings highlight exhaustion risk. Intraday volatility stands at 0.49%.

Previously it was reported that TELUS was exhibiting technical strength with a developing bullish bias above key short-term moving averages. The current analysis adds that, while short- and medium-term recovery is underway, investors should monitor the C$12.83 resistance level as a break above it could signal renewed momentum beyond the prevailing sideways range.
