Backblaze, Inc.: 20TB drives dominate

Backblaze, Inc. reports that 92 percent of new fleet drives now have capacities of 20TB or more, reflecting a sharp increase in AI-driven data requirements.

According to findings cited in the Backblaze Q1 2026 DriveStats Report and analyzed by Blocks and Files, data centers are accelerating upgrades to higher capacity drives to accommodate the relentless expansion of AI workloads. This trend is reshaping strategies for storage deployment across the sector.

Backblaze previously called for purpose-built AI storage to support GPU workloads at the Paris RAISE Summit. The company has also identified limitations in backup strategies following a LockBit ransomware attack. These developments highlight the company's attention to both performance optimization and data protection.
