U.S. Justice Department expands crackdown on Southeast Asia crypto fraud networks
U.S. widens crypto crackdown

U.S. authorities are intensifying efforts against Southeast Asian criminal groups that run cryptocurrency investment fraud schemes targeting Americans. The campaign combines prosecutors, federal agencies, private industry and foreign law enforcement as losses from the scams continue to grow.

Highlights

  • U.S. Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force is coordinating multi-agency actions to dismantle Southeast Asia-based transnational criminal scam compounds defrauding Americans.
  • The Justice Department and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro have seized hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency linked to these fraud networks before criminals could cash out.
  • Authorities are intensifying cooperation with private companies and foreign law enforcement to disrupt organizations exploiting U.S. infrastructure and targeting both Americans and allied country citizens.

Coordinated enforcement targets scam compounds

As reported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva says the Scam Center Strike Force is coordinating actions to dismantle transnational criminal organizations operating large scam compounds in Southeast Asia. He says the effort is being carried out with U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, federal law enforcement agencies and the Homeland Security Task Force National Coordination Center under President Trump’s executive order.

Duva says the networks lure workers with promises of well-paid jobs, confiscate their passports and force them to defraud Americans, often under physical duress. He says the Criminal Division is committing resources across its Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, Fraud Section, Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section, and Office of International Affairs to identify operators, bring charges, seek extraditions and pursue prosecutions.

He also says officials are working to seize and forfeit stolen funds and return assets to victims. According to his remarks, CCIPS has worked with Pirro’s office to seize hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency before criminals could cash out the proceeds.

Broader U.S. and international industry impact

Duva says the fraud groups exploit U.S. infrastructure and platforms, making cooperation with private companies a central part of the enforcement strategy. He adds that when businesses review whether their systems are being misused and share leads with law enforcement, authorities can act more quickly against the criminal networks.

The Justice Department says the organizations target not only Americans but also citizens of allied countries, prompting coordination with foreign law enforcement and multiple U.S. agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department and the Treasury Department. Duva says the aim is to disrupt and prosecute the compounds regardless of where the operators reside.

He urges victims of cryptocurrency investment fraud to file complaints with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. He also says people aged 60 or older can contact the National Elder Fraud Hotline for help reporting incidents and reaching the appropriate law enforcement agency.

In our previous coverage of the Scam Center Strike Force’s actions against scam compounds in Southeast Asia, we outlined how U.S. authorities brought charges tied to crypto investment fraud operations in Burma and Cambodia and moved to dismantle hundreds of fake investment websites. We also noted the parallel push to disrupt recruitment and trafficking-linked channels and to restrain large volumes of cryptocurrency allegedly connected to money laundering, alongside broader interagency measures aimed at sanctions and asset recovery.
