ContourGlobal enters UK market with Scotland battery storage acquisition
ContourGlobal is expanding into Britain with the acquisition of a large battery storage project in Scotland, marking the KKR-owned power producer's first move into the UK energy market. The company expects to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in the Ayr project, which is planned for final investment decision before the end of this year.
Highlights
- ContourGlobal acquired a 500 MW, 2 GWh battery storage project in Ayr from New Energy Partnership Limited, marking its UK market entry.
- The company aims for a final investment decision on the Ayr project by end-2024 and targets completion by end-2028 or early 2029.
- ContourGlobal sees stable UK regulatory support and growing revenue opportunities from battery assets as demand rises for renewables and data center power smoothing.
Scotland project anchors UK expansion
As reported by Reuters, ContourGlobal says the project was acquired from New Energy Partnership Limited and is set to become one of the largest battery storage developments now being advanced in Britain. Chief executive Antonello Cammisecra says the group plans to develop the asset over the next two years as part of a broader push into the market.Once completed, the site in Ayr on Scotland's southwest coast is expected to have 500 megawatts of power capacity and 2 GWh of storage capacity, equal to four hours of continuous discharge. ContourGlobal plans to take a final investment decision before the end of this year and expects the project to be completed by the end of 2028 or early 2029.
Cammisecra says Britain remains an attractive market despite the political change triggered after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday he would quit, opening the way for a transfer of power to frontrunner Andy Burnham. He adds that the company wants Britain to become its third-largest growth market after the U.S. and Chile.
Storage demand grows with renewables and data centers
ContourGlobal says the UK offers a stable regulatory framework and revenue opportunities from the range of services battery assets can provide to the grid. Cammisecra says he does not expect any reversal in support for battery storage as Britain continues to back the energy transition. The Ayr location is also seen as strategically useful for future offshore wind development and potentially for data centers. Battery systems are being deployed more widely in renewable-heavy regions because they can store excess electricity when supply is strong and release it when wind and solar output falls, while also helping smooth demand from power-hungry data center operations.
ContourGlobal, founded in 2005 and listed in London in 2017, was bought by KKR in 2022 in a deal worth 1.75 billion pounds. Under Cammisecra, a former senior Enel executive, the group is accelerating its shift toward predominantly renewable generation and reshaping its geographic footprint.
