Cava expands AI-driven operations as fast-casual competition intensifies
Cava boosts AI strategy

As fast-casual restaurant chains push for efficiency and sharper digital engagement, Cava says it is building systems that can better predict demand, tailor marketing, and support store operations in real time. The effort places technology at the center of the Mediterranean chain's growth strategy as it reports sales and traffic gains while avoiding heavy discounting.

Highlights

  • Cava introduces AI-driven platforms Cava Core and Cava Current to enable real-time demand forecasting, personalized marketing, and optimized staffing across its restaurants.
  • Cava reports 9.7% same-restaurant sales growth and 6.8% traffic growth in Q1, outperforming peers and attracting lower-income groups without aggressive discounting.
  • Fast-casual competitors including Chipotle, Sweetgreen, McDonald's, and Burger King are accelerating AI adoption for operational efficiencies amid heightened competition and softer consumer spending.

AI infrastructure shapes Cava's operating model

As reported by Business Insider, Cava executives say on the company's Tuesday earnings call that the chain is laying the groundwork to become a real-time AI-enabled business rather than operating solely as a traditional restaurant brand.

Chief executive Brett Schulman says Cava is building out its internal data and commerce infrastructure through two new systems introduced this year, Cava Core, a centralized data platform, and Cava Current, a real-time operating platform that now processes orders across restaurants. He says the systems are designed to create more personalized guest experiences while helping stores anticipate demand and align staffing and food preparation in real time.

In practice, that includes AI-based forecasting, predictive labor scheduling, inventory management, and personalized digital marketing. Schulman also says the technology is intended to enhance the human experience, not replace it, as the company works toward a more connected system that brings together data, applications, and intelligence over the coming years.

Sales momentum supports wider restaurant AI push

Cava reports 9.7% same-restaurant sales growth and 6.8% traffic growth in the first quarter. Executives say lower-income customer groups are outperforming other income brackets even as broader restaurant traffic softens, and they maintain that the company has avoided aggressive discounting in favor of positioning its menu as a value option with premium ingredients.

Cava's strategy reflects a broader shift across fast food and fast-casual operators that are increasingly presenting AI as a new engine for growth. Chipotle recently highlights its AI assistant Ava Cado for hiring, scheduling, prep planning, and operational insights, while Sweetgreen executives earlier this month discuss new data systems aimed at reducing waste, optimizing labor, and personalizing digital marketing.

The same pattern is visible at chains including McDonald's and Burger King, where AI is being used not only in customer-facing apps and chat tools but also in back-end operational tasks. For restaurant groups facing tighter consumer spending and heavier competition, these systems are becoming a way to run faster, leaner, and more consistently.

Our earlier coverage of AI-driven demand for London office space highlighted how fast-growing AI and technology tenants are supporting British Land’s results even as other parts of the commercial property market remain mixed. We noted that leasing interest from AI-focused companies is helping offset slowing rental growth in maturing segments, underscoring how AI expansion is translating into real-world demand beyond the tech sector.
