Hawaiian Electric closes lanes for work

Hawaiian Electric will remove electrical equipment at its Ahi substation on Tuesday, June 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as part of an ongoing project to enhance grid reliability in East Honolulu.

The scheduled maintenance requires the closure of two mauka lanes along Kawaihae Street, between Hawaii Kai Drive and Hakalau Place. Motorists should anticipate detours and traffic disruptions throughout the work period as crews carry out the infrastructure upgrades. Continued improvements at substations are considered crucial to reducing future outages and enhancing service resilience for local communities.

Hawaiian Electric is continuing its effort to bolster local infrastructure following recent initiatives. The company has sought public input through a survey designed to guide plans for a cleaner energy grid in Hawaii. It has also searched for a supervising engineer to lead Transmission and Distribution operations on Oahu with the goal of strengthening its network.
