Timelocked coins face upgrade challenge

Matt Corallo, industry influencer, highlights a potential risk for holders of timelocked coins if a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) is built.

Corallo explains that such holders would not be able to upgrade their coins unless elliptic curve (EC) is disabled but they are permitted to use a pre-commitment related to the transaction ID to broadcast it.

Corallo has previously noted that early bitcoins stored as raw public keys before the use of seed phrases and BIP 32 require action by owners for recovery. He has also compared quantum safety measures for reused addresses, stating that P2MR and P2TRv2 provide comparable levels of quantum resistance in such cases. His comments continue to address potential risks for legacy and advanced Bitcoin users as new technological threats emerge.
